Case Study: Structural Support at Elementary School

The ground surface adjacent to an elementary school building appeared to be sinking and causing distress cracks on the brick façade of the structure. It was determined that the settlement was likely caused by consolidation of improperly compacted backfill near the alignment of a stormwater pipe. EMC was contracted to expose the building’s footing and install helical piles to the appropriate torque and depth. A bracket was then installed below the existing foundation wall and the pile attached to the bracket. The purpose of this repair was to arrest any potential future settlement of the building walls. EMC then backfilled the excavation to rough grade.
